What is TEA?

The Transition Education Academy (TEA) is a transition program for students with disabilities who are ages 18-21. Students who participate in the TEA program have varying disabilities, including but not limited to autism, learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, emotional disabilities related to anxiety or depression, and speech-language impairment. TEA is located within the Intensive Education Academy (IEA) in West Hartford, Connecticut.

 

Purpose & Vision

The purpose and vision of TEA are to have all students gain independence as they prepare for the transition to adulthood by capitalizing on their strengths and interests to meet 21st century needs in the following areas:

  • pursuing employment opportunities and job skill readiness
  • accessing community experiences and engaging in leisure activities
  • developing independent daily living skills (i.e., cooking, cleaning, laundry, banking, transportation)
  • developing habits and a routine that promotes wellness in adulthood
  • maintaining and expanding functional academic skills in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics
  • exploring higher education opportunities, if appropriate
