Finance/HR Specialist

Accounting Functions:

Monitor compliance with generally accepted accounting principles for not-for-profit organizations

Periodically research and report (both in writing and orally) on relevant accounting, financial, HR, and other compliance issues

All A/P, A/R, daily business operations

Bank and investment accounts reconciliations

Preparation of journal entries as necessary including proper supporting documentation

Account analysis / Account reconciliation

General ledger - continually monitor for accuracy

Oversee development of financial policies and procedures, including writing procedure manuals

Act as a liaison with auditors during annual audit and preparation of 990

Oversee annual budget preparation, monitor budget variances monthly, and prepare reports

Prepare monthly reports to Finance Committee during Board meeting months

Oversee payroll including maintenance of true and accurate records, correct and timely submission to payroll service, assure compliance with state and federal wage and labor laws

Assessment, implementation of internal controls including risk assessments and review of risk areas

Maintain and reconcile fixed asset schedules

Month-end close procedures

Any other accounting duties or tasks that may arise

HR Functions:

Prepare contracts for new employees and annual renewals

Maintain new hire packets and assure all necessary hiring forms and procedures completed on a timely basis

Monitor correct implementation of benefits

Maintain accurate personnel records (excluding any evaluations or performance-related documents)

Monitor HR procedures for compliance with relevant Federal and State Wage, Labor, & Equal Opportunity laws, revise as necessary

Oversee preparation of written HR procedures, Employee handbook

Interface with employees as necessary regarding payroll, benefits information, required documents

Technology capabilities:

Microsoft Office - especially Excel and Word


Paychex Preview (web-based payroll system)

Lathem (time clock software)

Able to learn any software package and teach it to others

Excellent verbal and written communications skills

Scope of Position:

The General Accountant / HR Specialist will report to the Executive Director and the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors. The General Accountant will be expected to use professional judgment and accounting knowledge in the performance of the duties of the position and will be expected to contribute information on all financial operations matters. Final decision-making authority rests with the Executive Director, the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors, and the Board of Directors.
